Property Insurance: Protection for Assets and Belongings

Property insurance is a central component of modern risk management. It provides financial protection for tangible assets such as real estate, vehicles, household contents or business equipment against damage caused by accidents, natural disasters or theft.

What is property insurance?
Property insurance covers damage to physical objects caused by specific events such as fire, theft, vandalism, storm or water. It differs from liability or personal insurance in that it focuses on property. The best-known types of property insurance are household contents insurance, residential building insurance and motor vehicle insurance.

Household contents insurance

Household contents insurance protects the movable belongings in an apartment or house, e.g. furniture, electronics, clothing or jewellery, against damage caused by fire, water, burglary, storm or vandalism.

Benefits:

  • Replacement of damaged or stolen items (replacement value).
  • Additional options such as bicycle theft or cover for gross negligence.

Advantages:

  • Financial protection against the loss of everyday items.
  • Flexible add-on modules (e.g. overvoltage damage caused by lightning).

Please note:

  • Limited cover for special risks (e.g. flooding, often only with additional insurance).
  • Valuable items such as art or jewellery may require separate cover.

Residential building insurance

This insurance covers damage to the building itself, i.e. to its structure (e.g. walls, roof, windows) and to permanently installed elements such as heating or sanitary facilities. Typical causes of damage are fire, storm, hail, tap water or natural disasters (depending on the policy).

Selected benefits:

  • Restoration or reconstruction of the building.
  • Coverage of clearance or demolition costs.

Advantages:

  • Protection for one of your largest investments (your property).
  • Protection against high repair costs, e.g. after a fire.

Disadvantages:

  • Premiums can be high, especially for older buildings or in high-risk areas.
  • Not all natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes) are covered as standard.
